Our Pupil Profile: Our Values and Virtues

As a Catholic School in the Diocese of Menevia, we have embraced the Catholic Schools’ Pupil Profile, which teaches the children a set of eight pairs of virtues to be internalised and cultivated –

enabling them to grow in wholeness as fully rounded individuals in the image of God.

The pairs of virtues are:

 

  1. Grateful and generous                                                
  2. Attentive and discerning
  3. Compassionate and loving
  4. Faith-filled and hopeful
  5. Eloquent and truthful
  6. Learned and wise
  7. Curious and active
  8. Intentional and prophetic

 

At St Joseph’s Infant School, the children are growing to be:

 

          Grateful for their own gifts, for the gift of other people, and for the blessings of each day; and generous with their gifts, now and in the future.

 

Attentive to their experience and to their vocation; and discerning about the choices they make and the effects of those choices.

 

Compassionate towards others, near and far, especially the less fortunate; and loving by their just actions and forgiving words.

 

Faith-filled in their beliefs and hopeful for the future.

Each half Term we explore ways in which we can develop in our virtues and values.

Saint Joseph’s Sponsored Strava challenge

We as a school and parish community are aiming to raise money for the plight of Bishop Giovanni. Our Missio group have decided that we are going to do our best to walk or run as many miles in May as possible! Our astronomical end goal is 5929 miles! The distance between Port Talbot and Peru.

This challenge is all about exercising with family whilst raising money for such an important cause. Your whole family can take part and help you to reach your sponsorship goals.

Please follow the instructions below to take part.

 

  1. Sign up to Strava app.
  2. Use ‘explore’ and search for ‘Saint Joseph’s Infants’ in ‘Clubs’. Request to join!
  3. Once you have joined our club, every walk or run will be added to our mileage and our leader board. We will be tallying up the miles at the end of each week.
  4. *Important* every time you Record a walk or run and ‘choose a sport’, please choose ‘Run’ EVEN if you are walking. This will allow your activity to be added to our mileage leader board.
  5. Please involve your whole family! Brothers, Sisters, Aunt’s, Uncle’s, Grandparents! The more family members involved, the better.

Curious and Active- Catholic Pupil Profile

Children have been invited  to dress in harvest colours or their favourite dressing up costume to celebrate Harvest. Please support our local community of Port Talbot. Tomorrow  we will collect for the Port Talbot Food Bank, we will be walking in Jesus’ footsteps, and living out his message. Help us to role model how we can give back something to those in need and like Pope Francis suggests develop the habit of taking care of ourselves and others. Send in your FOOD BANK DONATIONS tomorrow Friday 23rd October. We will of course leave the items 72 hours during half term before we handle them.

In school we have been helping our children to be curious about everything: active in their engagement with the world, changing what they can for the better.

What’s in a food parcel?

 

Food banks provide a minimum of three-days’ nutritionally balanced, non-perishable tinned and dried foods that have been donated people in the local community

We’ve worked with nutritionists to develop a food parcel that contains sufficient nutrition for adults and children, for at least three days of healthy, balanced meals for individuals and families.

A typical food parcel includes:

  • Cereal
  • Soup
  • Pasta
  • Rice
  • Tinned tomatoes/ pasta sauce
  • Lentils, beans and pulses
  • Tinned meat
  • Tinned vegetables
  • Tea/coffee
  • Tinned fruit
  • Biscuits
  • UHT milk
  • Fruit juice

Many food banks also provide essential non-food items such as toiletries and hygiene products.

If you’re organising a collection for your local food bank, please check with them first to see which items they are currently in need of.

A million children in praying the Rosary

In every class we will be thinking about praying for peace and the end of COVID-19. Please fill in your special intentions on the template that will come home on Friday.

Last Sunday Pope Francis invited children to participate together in a very special initiative. A Catholic charity hopes to bring together a million children worldwide to pray the rosary this Sunday.

Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) is seeking to unite the children  in praying for peace and the end of the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed more than a million people around the world.

Please could you take some time with your child the prayers that make up the Rosary. It has been a long Summer so maybe start with the first part of the Hail Mary.

Collective Worship at St Joseph’s Infant School

We provide a daily act of collective worship. Worship lies at the heart of Christian life and at the heart of our school. This reflects the traditions of our Catholic community. At St Joseph”s this takes many exciting and spiritually developing experiences for all the children. Collective Worship often makes links to our school’s core Christian Values. We follow the Catholic Church Calendar when planning Collective Worship and St Joseph’s has built up an excellent relationship with Saint Joseph’s Port Talobot and Our Lady of Margam to support this work. Children are encourage to plan, lead and evaluate worship throughout the year. Our Missio Ambassadors have helped provide resources for every class. This term Missio have designed and painted pebbles displaying the Catholic virtues of ATTENTIVE and DISCERNING. These have been presented to each class. Children at an age appropriate level are responsible for setting the space for worship to take place in and leading the gathering, prayers and sending out.   

We believe that the outcomes of Collective Worship should be:

  • Social experience
  • Awareness
  • Spiritual experience
  • Development of Skills
  • Development of Knowledge
  • Confidence
  • Ability to pray

Every child has opportunities to take part in Collective Worship and develop spiritual reflection.

Missio Mass at Swansea Cathedral

Our Missio group have been very busy this week!

We started the week with a special visitor that Canon Paul had invited to our school. The visitor was a lady from Missio UK who came to see all the work we have been doing as Missio ambassadors. We presented her with a cheque from our recent Missio box collection and she was very impressed with all that we do in St. Joseph’s! See the tweet below!

 

We then joined our fellow Diocese of Menevia schools in a wonderful Mass celebration at Swansea Cathedral!

The Mass was to celebrate Pope Francis’ extraordinary month of Mission. It was a wonderful occasion and lovely to take part in the Offertory and receive our Mission candle to burn brightly in our school.

In this month of October the Extraordinary Month of Mission

We reflect on the Catholic Virtues GENEROUS and GRATEFUL

We welcomed to Saint Joseph’s Missio Coordinator for England and Wales Mrs Shiela Isaacs and Missio Leader for Menevia, our RE Link Governor Canon Paul. Children  had the opportunity to chat with Mrs Isaacs about projects we have been working on in school.

We are following the Pope’s plea to 

‘Go and create a world of brothers and sisters!’

Building on Year 2’s Assembly message of Laudato Si we are working on the main themes of the Extraordinary month of Mission

-To encourage a deeper relationship with Jesus through prayer

-To be inspired by the actions of our saints, like St. Therese of Lisieux and missionaries like Bishop Giovani Cefai in Peru.

-To increase our support of overseas mission

 

During the visit our Missio Ambassadors presented Mrs Isaacs with a cheque for £127  to support the work of missions overseas.
