Covid 19 – A Letter from St. Joseph’s

20th March 2020

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have now received further guidance from the local authority. The following plans are now being put into place.

From today (20.03.20), all schools will close to their pupils. On Monday, all schools will open to provide care / recreation / learning for children of essential workers.

This is the local authority’s list of essential workers:

  • health workers – all those employed within the NHS
  • blue light / emergency service officers
  • social care workers, those working in care homes, providing domiciliary care within the home setting, social workers.
  • supermarket delivery drivers
  • prison officers and other prison staff
  • probation service staff
  • school staff (if you work in another school provision for your child to attend St Joseph’s is available)

Many thanks for all who have filled in the online form.  If you are a worker within these essential services from the above list, please be prepared to prove this.

“Grab & Go” Bags (consisting of a sandwich made from wholemeal bread (ham/cheese/jam), fruit , biscuit and a drink) will be provided for all our free school meal pupils. Kitchen staff will be aware of any allergies. These can be collected every day from school at 11.45. If your child travels by school bus, grab and go bags can be collected from the nearest primary school.

Please ensure that any child who has been absent from school this week/ family members that are in isolation due to symptoms, do not return to school until after the 14 day period has passed. This is in line with NHS guidelines and to ensure that we continue to safeguard our pupils and staff.

I am sure that you will agree that the local authority has worked extremely hard at putting these measures in place and we are extremely grateful for everything that they are doing for our families at this very difficult time.

Many thanks to all of you for your support during this extremely challenging time.

Please keep each other in your prayers.

Oxford Reading Buddy

Dear parents and guardians,

Welcome to our new online reading service! This sits alongside our current reading scheme.

Step 1. You will find your child’s log in details on the inside of their reading record.

Your child’s teacher has set your child’s library to include books from stage 1 up to the current stage they are on.

Some ebooks have a quiz to complete after reading the story. Quizzes are similar to new online literacy National Tests which children will sit in the Summer term in year 2.

Quizzes are important feedback that tell parents and teachers how well a child has understood their book.

Encourage your child to read the text without the audio, but they will also enjoy listening to the story being read to them. Text tracking helps your child to follow the text.

The Three Kings Visit

In school this week, staff and children have reflected on the visit of the wise men who travelled from the East, bringing with them such strange gifts; gold, frankincense and myrrh. What strange gifts to give a baby?

They came to worship Jesus born to be King of all the world.

Take some time to think about our gifts for Jesus.

Missio Mass at Swansea Cathedral

Our Missio group have been very busy this week!

We started the week with a special visitor that Canon Paul had invited to our school. The visitor was a lady from Missio UK who came to see all the work we have been doing as Missio ambassadors. We presented her with a cheque from our recent Missio box collection and she was very impressed with all that we do in St. Joseph’s! See the tweet below!

We then joined our fellow Diocese of Menevia schools in a wonderful Mass celebration at Swansea Cathedral!

The Mass was to celebrate Pope Francis’ extraordinary month of Mission. It was a wonderful occasion and lovely to take part in the Offertory and receive our Mission candle to burn brightly in our school.

Year 2 – Numeracy Procedural Test Feedback

Your child has undertaken a short, online personalised assessment for Numeracy (Procedural) and their feedback is now available for you to view.

The purpose of personalised assessments is to help all children progress, through understanding what they can do, the things they need to work on, and their next steps.

What is Numeracy (Procedural)?
Numeracy (Procedural) focuses on numerical facts and procedures – the numerical ‘tools’ that are needed to apply numeracy within a range of contexts.

How does the assessment work?
The questions are chosen from a large ‘bank’ designed for Years 2 to 9. Each question is selected based on the answer given to the previous question. If pupils get a question right they are given a slightly harder question next. If they cannot answer a question, or answer incorrectly, they receive a slightly easier one. All pupils will get some questions right and some questions wrong, as this gathers information on the limits of what each pupil can do at that particular time. This means all
pupils will receive an assessment that is unique to them.

What does the feedback tell me?
This feedback represents a snapshot of your child‘s skills at the time the assessment was taken. It provides just one source of information on your child’s overall knowledge and understanding. Your child’s teacher will consider this feedback, alongside other information they have on your child’s skills in numeracy work in the classroom, in order to plan their learning.

  • The first section ‘The hardest questions I got right were on these skills:’ lists the areas in which your child gave correct answers for the most challenging questions.
  • The second section ‘I may need to work on:’ relates to the questions answered incorrectly and the areas they may need to focus on.
  • The final two sections ‘Most pupils with similar skills are able to … and are likely to move on to:’ relate to your child’s overall performance in the assessment and provide an overview of the sort of skills that pupils with a similar pattern of answers are able to achieve or are working
    towards.

Reports to parents and carers will be provided at the end of the school year, showing progress over time, based on a standardised score.  These will take the form of previous National Test reports.
